Matthew Knies is expected to get a pretty significant contract extension, and NHL Insider Frank Seravalli has seemingly named the price for the Maple Leafs.

The continued saga of Matthew Knies' next contract is one that the fans and Maple Leafs are keeping a close eye on. Whether he signs for a shorter bridge deal or the team locks him up for the long haul; it seems one way or another he's sticking around.

Matthew Knies' projected price for Maple Leafs; and for those wanting to sign him away

For NHL Insider Frank Seravalli, he believes he knows that price that'll keep him sticking around, and the potential cost for a team willing to put in an offer sheet:
I think the projections are slightly off on Matthew Knies, I do think the 7.25-7.5 AAV is correct, but I don't think it's that number if you start to buy more UFA years, because this is a guy who's already at 30 goals.

He plays a totally physical brand of hockey with speed, size, toughness, he's a human nail gun, 182 hits last season, he's a special player. With that said Wyatt Johnston set the table for you with $8.4M for 5 years.

With that said you'd have to really present something significant and it would have to be something in that 11x7 range, under the four 1st RD pick compensation to get the Leafs to really think long and hard about saying no. - Frank Seravalli

Matthew Knies one expensive future superstar

If any team was planning to sign Knies to anything more than $8M per season, it would run them at least three picks in 2026, and once that amount gets higher, the compensation becomes wild.
Teams like Chicago, Calgary, Detroit, and Vegas can all offer a lot of money and deal their picks away which would not only give them a superstar of the future but the Maple Leafs a chance to fully rebuild if things come down to that.
Knies, 22, had 58 points in 78 games (29G, 29A) in a breakout season that also included 182 hits; he's one of the most unique and dynamic players due to his mix of speed, size, strength and offensive capabilities.
With Mitch Marner seemingly out of the equation going forward barring some miraculous turnaround, Knies is the next homegrown star the team can build around and hopefully see become a potential 75-80 point player.
Players like Knies don't come around often, and Toronto has the chance to keep him around to be their franchise power forward for the next near decade.
It's just going to cost them, and it's going to cost a whole lot more to lure him away.
