Mathews came out saying Leafs will get better following their 5th straight first round exit. «I really believe in the team and I really believe in all of the players on the team the core group especially.» «I truly believe that we're going to get it done. We're going to be better from our losses, and from the adversity we faced.»

Toronto finished first in the North Division last season and had a 3-1 lead against Montreal in the first round of the playoffs, before succumbing to their 5th straight first round exit at the hands of the Canadiens. The Maple Leafs have no passed the second round of the playoffs since 2004, a staggering 17 years.
Mathews however is doing his part to get his team to the promise land. Mathews led the entire league in goals last season with 41, and was tied for fifth in scoring with 66 points in 52 games played.

The Maple Leafs seem to of been snake bitten as of late in the playoffs, whether that being Kadri suspensions in the past or untimely injuries like losing Tavares in Game 1 of last years playoffs or losing Muzzin for their most crucial game of the season (game 7). «Extremely disappointing,» Mathews said. «But it'll just feel that much better when we eventually get to the top.»
Let's not forget how long it took Tampa Bay to finally breakout and win their first cup. Even with their lethal core group of Stamkos, Headman, and for shorter periods of time with the likes Bishop, Kucherov, and Point to name a few who helped a long the way.
Toronto will be extremely dependent on their core to do much of the same. General manager Kyle Dubas is extremely confident in this core of Tavares, Mathews, Marner, Nylander, and Reilly. Stating he would «bet everything» that Toronto will find a way to win the Stanley Cup.
The Maple Leafs are looking to start this crucial season on the right foot when they try to exercise a bit of demons, hosting and facing the Montreal Canadiens on Oct. 13. A little taste of revenge to start the season should have them going on a great start.
