Jeff Gorton may have just signalled the end of a forward with the Canadiens

Montreal Canadiens VP of Hockey Operations Jeff Gorton was on TSN690 earlier this week.

The Canadiens is currently very close to the salary cap and has little or no wiggle room. It's a given that a forward will leave the ship at some point.

What will the Habs do to lower their weight? Put a high-paid player on the shelf?

Here are Gorton's comments:

"It's not your preferred option (putting a high-salaried forward in the tank), it's not something we want to do, but sometimes you don't have a choice. If all these young players are willing to help us now and it also helps them become better players, then yes, we will create space.

Whether it's by trade or by ballot, we'll be as creative as we can to make it work, so we can get the right players in place." - Jeff Gorton

Here are the candidates who could leave the organization, whether via ballot or trade:

- Evgeny Dadonov ($5 million for one year)

- Mike Hoffman ($4.5 million for two years)

- Joel Armia (3.4 million for three years)

- Jonathan Drouin ($5.5 million for one year)

- Paul Byron ($3.4 million for one year)
