Reports are confirming that Ilya Kovalchuk has signed a contract to return to pro hockey after a 2 year hiatus.

Today it was announced that at 40-years-old Ilya Kovalchuk has signed a one year deal in the KHL. He will play with Spartak Moskva.

Following a 2-year absence from playing professional ice hockey, 🇷🇺Ilya Kovalchuk signs a 1-year contract with #Spartak Moskva in the #KHL!

Kovalchuk, 40, most recently played for #Avangard Omsk during the 2020-21 season and scored 17 (5+12) points in 16 #KHL games. He won a Gagarin Cup championship as well, scoring 9 (4+5) points in 24 playoff games.

The former first overall pick is a 2x World Champion, Olympic gold medalist (as MVP), U18 World Champion, 3x Gagarin Cup winner, and has 876 career #NHL points to his name.

During his most recent KHL run Kovalchuk played with Avangard Omsk and had 17 points in 16 games in 2020-21.
This will likely be the hockey community's last opportunity to see Kovalchuk in action.
