The Hurricanes extended an offer sheet to restricted free agent forward Jesperi Kotkaniemi on Saturday. The one-year deal is for $6.1 million.

The Canadiens made an offer sheet to Hurricanes player Sebastian Aho two years ago, thus this is probably a vengeance from Carolina general manager Don Waddell and owner Tom Dundon. The Hurricanes have tried before to get Jesperi Kotkaniemi.
According to TSN's Pierre LeBrun, Carolina tried to acquire Kotkaniemi's rights from the Canadiens this past week but couldn't come to an agreement with Montreal.
"Hurricanes did try to trade for Kotkaniemi instead over the past several days but nothing that came close to making the Habs interested. So Dundon gets his offer sheet revenge." LeBrun said in a tweet.
The Canadiens now have seven days to match Carolina's offer or else the Hurricanes will compensate them with a pair of draft picks (first + third).
