The Toronto Maple Leafs shut the door on the NHL's worst team in the Columbus Blue Jackets Friday night. It was a 3-0 shut-out courtesy of Illya Samsonov's reliable tending and the Maple Leaf's defense showing up.
This was not the case, as Saturday night against the same team and Elvis Merzlkins, rookie goal-tender Joseph Woll got a rude awakening for his 5th NHL start in 2023. Chiming in on the situation was Kasimir Kaskisuo after the game, his time with the team was recalled.
-
Shortly after Kaskisuo's first start, he was quickly sent back down to the AHL with the Toronto Marlies after a terrible 1st showing in the NHL. Kaskisuo, prior to it had been in the AHL 5 years before he got a look in the bigs. It didn't help his case that he had a game under Mike Babcock, which we all know what happened after that fiasco, quickly replaced by Sheldon Keefe.
Even though Woll's outing wasn't terrible, stopping 36 or 40 shots, it's arguable that the Leafs hung him out to dry against a Columbus Blue Jackets team that had an axe to grind.
Kaskisuo's statement rings true, he may be joking but the resentment is deep as after his time with the Leafs was over, he was shuffled from the Nashville Predators and is now in the SHL.
Will Joseph Woll get the Kaskisuo treatment?
