Huge Setback For Top Prospect Matvei Michkov
The Philadelphia Flyers selected Russian prospect Matvei Michkov with the 7th overall pick in the 2023 NHL Draft. The pick was met with many mixed opinions from the NHL Draft community. Now in his first few games since being drafted Michkov has hit a bump in the road.
Michkov Back With SKA
After spending most of his draft season with HK Sochi in the KHL Matvei Michkov has returned to SKA St. Petersburg for the upcoming season. In past seasons Michkov has struggled to get playing time when with SKA. Now it seems that the trend may continue.
Michkov Losing Playing Time In KHL
After a good start in the KHL pre-season, Matvei Michkov has started to slip. He was recently demoted to only playing 8 minutes two games ago, five minutes in his last game, and now looks to be on the outside looking in.
According to Grant McCagg a former NHL scout and NHL Draft personality Matvei Michkov was benched for the most recent SKA game. After such a strong start things might be going off the rails for the young star.
Will The Risk Be Worth The Reward?
The Philadelphia Flyers knew there was a risk in taking Michkov. The upside if they can get him to hit though is generational. The biggest thing for now is that Michkov needs games to develop. Currently, SKA may be stunting the growth he could potentially be getting in favor of more veteran options.
