One Thing is Certain for Sidney Crosby's Future in Pittsburgh
Sidney Crosby has two years left on his contract and we already have an idea of what his next contract will look like.
Crosby's Current Situation
Sidney Crosby has gone from the best player in the NHL to one of the more underrated elite players in the league. While he is past his prime, he can still make jaw-dropping moves and score at an elite rate.
Coming off a 93-point year, Crosby is still among the best players in the NHL. He is currently entering the 11th year of a 12-year deal, Crosby will be making a very modest $8.7 million next season and the one after.
Crosby's Next Contract
Every single contract aside from his ELC that Crosby has signed has had an AAV of $8.7 million. Crosby's 87 holds much significance to him being born on 8/7/87 and just generally using the number his entire life.
Dave Molinari of Pittsburgh Hockey Now said the following about Crosby's next contract.
"While precisely how many seasons Crosby's next contract will cover is hard to say, there's not much mystery about the money that will be involved. It's pretty much a lock to be based on some permutation of «87,» whether it's the third in a series of contracts with an $8.7 million salary-cap hit, a deal that pays him $87 an hour or one that's worth 87 cents per second."
This could come in many forms like Molinari stated but it seems like a lock that Crosby will work 87 in there somehow. We will most likely see another $8.7 million AAV deal as that simply makes sense for Crosby given his performance right now.
