Over the past 18 months, there's been plenty of controversy surrounding the NHL, and at the center of plenty of it has been Alex Ovechkin, who's Russian heritage has catapulted him to the forefront of the Russian players issue.
A veteran beef
Since the Russian invasion of Ukraine, the entirety of the Russian hockey player group in the NHL has been under scrutiny, with players even being banned from IIHF competition, and there's many out there that believe that should be extended to the NHL.
One of those players is Czech born Dominik Hasek, who is considered one of the greatest goaltenders of all-time, who has made his feelings about the situation and Ovechkin very, very clear.
What!? Not only an alibist, a chicken sh*t, but also a liar! Every adult in Europe knows well, that Putin is a mad killer and that Russia is waging an offensive war against the free country and its people. The NHL must immediately suspend contracts for all Russian players! Every athlete represents not only himself and his club, but also his country and its values and actions. That is a fact. If the NHL does not do so, it has indirect co-responsibility for the dead in Ukraine.
I also want to write, that I am very sorry for those Russian athletes, who condemn V. Putin and his Russian aggression in Ukraine. However, at the moment I also consider their exclusion a necessity.
Hasek didn't mince words when talking about Ovechkin, and now, after plenty of criticism from one side, Ovi has officially responded.
A strong reply
While Ovechkin has been open about his feelings on several topics, he's often straight forward and to the point, and it was no different with his response to Hasek.
I'm not very interested in his statements, he told Russian news site Izvestia of Hasek's harsh assessment. Of course, I know him as a good goalkeeper in my time.
These are two of the best players at their position in NHL history, and while one side of this rivalry appears to not be interested in the back-and-forth, Hasek is very outspoken, and it's safe to say he'll have a major response to this one.
