Vladimir Guerrero Jr. Sparks Debate After Wearing Auston Matthews Jersey Before Game 7
Toronto Blue Jays star Vladimir Guerrero Jr.'s Auston Matthews jersey has fans talking ahead of tonight's pivotal Game 7, but drawing some criticism as well.
Blue Jays first baseman Vladimir Guerrero Jr. showed up to Toronto's pivotal Game 7 matchup of the American League Championship Series (ALCS) against the Seattle Mariners in an Auston Matthews jersey, sparking discussion.
The video has sparked talk from both hockey and baseball fans, with one clear talking point dominating the conversation.
Guerrero Jr. Walks In Wearing Auston Matthews' Jersey Before Game 7 vs Seattle
Heading into the Rogers Centre for the Toronto Blue Jays must-win Game 7, with a trip to the World Series on the line, Guerrero came into the arena wearing the jersey of his nearby neighbor, Auston Matthews.
Like Matthews, Guerrero is one of the top players in his sport, having 23 home runs and 84 RBI's for the Jays last season, with a .292 AVG and .848 OPS.
In the postseason, Guerrero leads all of MLB with six home runs and 12 RBI's with a whopping 1.532 OPS in 10 games.
However, it's not Guerrero's eye watering stats this postseason that are having some fans talking ahead of tonight, it's his choice of outfit, and what specifically it represents to Leafs fans.
Fans Split Over the Choice, Pointing to Matthews' Game 7 Record
Toronto Maple Leafs fans, who have had their share of heartbreak, specifically in Game 7's, had an obviously concerned reaction to Vladdy's "tribute" to Auston Matthews.
Many hockey fans pointed to the Leafs poor Game 7 luck, with it noted that the Leafs are 0-7 in Game 7's in the last 20 years, and that Matthews has not won a Game 7 as a Maple Leaf.
The Toronto Maple Leafs have had some famous Game 7 losses, including their collapse to the Boston Bruins in 2013, and most recently last season against the Florida Panthers.
For Leafs fans, the symbol of respect from one legend to another holds a different meaning. Some fans and rivals even had jokes at the Leafs expense over their playoff struggles.
The Toronto Blue Jays starved off elimination last night with a 6-2 win against Seattle, led by Guerrero having two hits and a home run, and rookie pitcher Trey Yesavage striking out seven across 5.2 innings of work.
Toronto will be looking to make their first World Series since their back-to-back win in 1993. On the National League side, the reigning champion Los Angeles Dodgers swept the Milwaukee Brewers in four games.
In a win-all series, the Toronto Blue Jays are hoping their tribute to the Leafs doesn't become a symbol to their fellow Toronto team's postseason woes.
