An awkward collision between Craig Berube and Jake McCabe in practice had the Leafs head coach with a clear response.
Although practice isn't always perfect, Toronto Maple Leafs defenseman Jake McCabe was in an unexpected situation as he collided with Head Coach Craig Berube during the team's skate.
Video from practice shows McCabe trying to grab possession of a pass near where Berube is standing, knocking into his coach as he goes to receive the puck.
McCabe, who extended a bit too wide for the puck, didn't cause any sort of injury or push Berube over, only bumping into his coach before the play was quickly brushed off and things continued as normal.
How Craig Berube and Jake McCabe handled the collision in real time
Unlike the Leafs roster, there's no injury to Craig Berube, and nothing to Jake McCabe, but Berube said he made sure to check if McCabe was alright after.
Well, I asked him if he was all right. I mean, I was doing the same drill a few years ago in St. Louis and David Perron.
Ran me right over, like I didn't see him. You know, I was a little too close involved, and I went down and I cracked the rib. We were laughing.
So the next day, the boys drew an outline of me on the ice. We got a good chuckle out of that.
Although not common, collisions have led to serious injuries in practice, such as to Florida Panthers captain Aleksander Barkov who was injured during the pre-season after colliding with Panthers defenseman Niko Mikkola.
John Tavares missed time last season
due to an injury suffered in practice, causing him to miss six games back in January of this past year.
McCabe
avoided a potential injury last week after taking a puck in the face area during Toronto's game against the Montreal Canadiens on Nov. 24th.
Although the play was largely innocuous, with poor injury luck for Toronto who already have injuries on their back end with Chris Tanev and Brandon Carlo, even a minor incident is one the Leafs will be thankful wasn't anything serious.
