Two Top Maple Leafs Prospects to Clash in Championship Final
The Toronto Maple Leafs have a couple of highly touted prospects who are set to face off in the OHL Championship Finals.
With the Maple Leafs
set to do battle in the second round of the Stanley Cup Playoffs against the Florida Panthers, the OHL playoffs have been in full swing, and it's come down to two teams in a repeat of last year's championship final.
It's the London Knights taking on the Oshawa Generals, with the Knights looking to repeat, and the Generals looking for revenge for last season's defeat.
The Maple Leafs are well represented, with their two top prospects set to do battle.
It's prospect number one vs. prospect number two as Easton Cowan and his 27-point outburst will take on the staunch defender in Danford, who has five points of his own, but is more known for being a defensive player.
While we don't know the other three teams from the OHL, WHL, and QMJHL just yet, we can expect there to be a hard fought battle for the coveted spot.
Cowan has had yet another incredible season and it wouldn't be surprising to see him head back to the Memorial Cup once again.
This season wasn't the mind-blowing 96 point campaign from last year, but still put up great numbers.
In 46 games he put up 69 points (29G, 40A) even though he missed a few games due to injury, and is firmly set to be a massive part of Toronto's future; especially with names like
Fraser Minten and
Nikita Grebenkin traded away. But the 27 points in 12 games is frankly, absurd.
Danford, Toronto's most recent pick, had himself a decent season as well.
Though he only put up 25 points, he had much more edge to his game, and locked things down on the Generals back end.
He might be a year or two away from making an impact, but if he continues his ascent, he'll become a mainstay in no time.
This tournament won't necessarily determine whether or not either man are going to make the team, but if they both have a strong showing, you bet they are going to get a strong look at training camp and could bypass the AHL altogether, but nothing is guaranteed in the NHL.
But it's pretty awesome to see a couple of Maple Leafs prospects trying to become the best of the best in junior hockey.
It's been awhile since they have a bright farm system, and this is only proving it more and more.
