Toronto Maple Leafs announce 25 cuts

Just moments ago, the Toronto Maple Leafs announced that they had officially cut 25 players from the team, sending them to the Marlies and Junior hockey.

Earlier in the day, Dakota Mermis and Cole McWard were placed on waivers. However, another 25 players were ultimately sent down to the Toronto Marlies or sent to junior.

Guys like Harry Nansi, Tyler Hopkins, and Alexander Belicki are going to their junior teams. Meanwhile, 22 other guys will take part in Marlies training camp.

This is a large amount of players, but it is a move that had to be done. The Toronto Maple Leafs are trying to narrow down their opening night roster to 23 players, and this is one of the choices that has to be made.

These players were never going to make the team, especially the three who are now going back to junior for more development.

As for the guys going to the Marlies, they will now have an opportunity to work on their game and potentially prove that they have what it takes to make the NHL at a later date.

Over the coming days, expect more cuts as the Maple Leafs play the Ottawa Senators tonight in preseason action.
