34 players hit waivers and none of it is good for the Maple Leafs

The Toronto Maple Leafs placed two players on waivers today, with 32 others also getting the waiver treatment as NHL rosters are days away from being solidified.

Earlier today, the Toronto Maple Leafs announced that Dakota Mermis and Cole McWard were being placed on waivers. If they clear waivers, they will immediately go down to the AHL, where they would theoretically play for the Toronto Marlies.

Overall, this was a difficult decision for the Maple Leafs, although it had to be done. There just isn't enough room for Mermis and McWard to feasibly make the roster.

Meanwhile, 32 other players hit waivers, including six goalies. Of course, Maple Leafs general manager John Chayka is monitoring the situation. It's his job to look for players that the Leafs could use right now.

Unfortunately, based on the waiver wire list provided by Puck Pedia, one thing has become clear. Despite the abundance of players on waivers, there really is no one intriguing for the Maple Leafs.

This is a tough spot for the Leafs to be in. Simply put, barring a trade with another team, they don't really have many avenues to improve the roster.

At this time, John Chayka is stuck with the roster he has now. It is a solid roster, especially with guys like Auston Matthews, William Nylander, John Tavares, and Gavin McKenna at the top.

Maple Leafs continue preseason action today

The Leafs have already placed two players on waivers, but more waiver additions are certainly on the horizon.

Tonight, the Leafs play split-squad games against the Ottawa Senators. It is here that we will get a sense of who can still make the team and who is going to get bumped out.

If you are a Maple Leafs fan, tonight should prove to be a whole lot of fun. However, for Chayka and the rest of the front office, this is going to come with some stress.

Tomorrow, we could see a lot more than just 34 players hit waivers.
