NHL's Controversial Call: Why Sam Bennett Faced No Discipline After Injuring Anthony Stolarz
The NHL gave their reasoning as to why Sam Bennett got away scot-free with injuring Anthony Stolarz in Game 1 of the second round.
It was a brazen bit of violence on Monday night as Sam Bennett elbowed Anthony Stolarz in the head
during Florida's 5-4 loss to the Maple Leafs. Needing to be hospitalized, things were scary but seem to be trending upward.
Many thought that Bennett would receive some punishment but he did not, either on or off the ice and it made fans outraged.
The NHL themselves have a lot to answer for with a variety of things which also includes a couple of potentially dishonest referees.
But their main focus on why Bennett didn't get punished was a bit bizarre:
There was more than one incident that could've concussed Stolarz, so they'll say, how do you prove it was Bennett?
Well I mean, there's clear video evidence of Bennett's elbow hitting Stolarz in the head and unless everyone else missed it too, the league needs to explain themselves.
NHL Needs More Accountability With Regards To Player Safety
It's true that any shot or incident could have concussed him, but this was a blatant shot to the head which goes against the NHL rules on headshots.
There's zero consistency with the league, and there's got to be some accountability from George Parros and the Player Safety Department but that's like trying to pull teeth.
How is it that the NHL has no issues suspending
Aaron Ekblad for a hit against Tampa, but then turn around and not give the same to Bennett, or give them the same treatment in the
first round agains Ottawa?Whatever it is only frustrates fans more, and the fact that the Maple Leafs are messed around time and time again is egregious; it's feeling personal now.
If the league would have actually done something in game for Bennett's actions instead of trying to say "Oops we didn't know" when there's video evidence and the fact the goaltender left on a stretcher and was physically ill, then we'd be fine.
We wouldn't be happy, but we'd be relieved that at least SOMETHING happened with Bennett.
But for now it's just another case of the NHL trying to play the victim while simultaneously making life miserable for the Toronto Maple Leafs.
