Mystery Surrounds David Kampf's Status After Recent Maple Leafs Roster Moves

Toronto Maple Leafs insider Jonas Siegel revealed veteran forward David Kampf is no longer with the team, but mysteriously; no one has a clue where he's gone.
The Toronto Maple Leafs waived David Kampf recently as
a way to make room on their roster for a lot of the new faces including Nic Roy and
Easton Cowan. He had fallen out of favor and his lack of a roster spot left the writing on the wall for the Czech forward.
He cleared waivers and was expected to be demoted to the Marlies, or at some point perhaps bought out or had his contract otherwise terminated. They couldn't find a trade for him, so that avenue seems like a lost cause.
Insider Update Sparks Questions About Kampf's Status in Toronto
So while he was skating with the team previously, he's absent from the Maple Leafs practice on Monday. Was it an injury? Illness? Alien abduction?
According to Maple Leafs insider Jonas Siegel, there is no reason. Siegel noted on social media that Kampf was simply no longer a part of the team; with no follow-up or information regarding his absence:
No longer with the team opens up a whole can of worms and speculation as to what could be the cause.
The likeliest scenario is that he was demoted to the Marlies or otherwise taken off the 23-man roster going into the season. But beyond that we have no real inklings as to where his future lies.
The team could end up entertaining a buyout option, and with a rising cap that might not be the worst idea in the world. Letting him stagnate in the Marlies isn't great for his confidence or his career, and he's never really had to be there in the first place.
What David Kampf's Disappearance Means for the Maple Leafs' Opening Night Roster
But the silver lining in this frankly, bizarre situation is that the other Maple Leafs who were on the outs suddenly get a much easier chance to slot into the lineup.
We see Nick Robertson seemingly secure his spot,
Calle Jarnkrok is going to take over the Kampf role down low, while Nic Roy and
Steven Lorentz help him out.
If he couldn't find his way into the lineup now, what chance does he have when they are healthy?
So it leaves room for the Robertsons, the Jarnkroks, heck, even the Easton Cowans of the team to come in and make an impact in a much bigger way than Kampf could, at potentially half or even two-thirds of the cost.
It's not that David Kampf is a bad player, but he doesn't fit with the Maple Leafs, and his absence while mysterious, isn't at all surprising.
