With the 2PM waiver deadline passing, we now know that fate of veteran forward David Kampf's future with the Toronto Maple Leafs.
On Friday, it was announced that veteran forward David Kampf was
placed on waivers as the Maple Leafs look to thin their roster and look for a new-look lineup going into the 2025-26 season.
Kampf's Status Confirmed Following 24-Hour Waiver Window
It was a bit shocking considering
Scott Laughton's injury, but he was placed there nonetheless, and with the 2PM deadline passing, we can confirm his fate.
It appears that Kampf was not claimed by any team, and the Maple Leafs will be able to decide whether to keep him around, demote him to the AHL, or perhaps outright terminate his deal.
Also of note that defensive prospect
William Villeneuve also cleared waivers after being placed there Friday.
Kampf, 30, had 13 points in 59 games for the Maple Leafs last year, however seemed to have fallen out of Craig Berube's favor and was barely used in the postseason, and hasn't really been a focal point at all this preseason.
What the Decision Means for the Maple Leafs' Roster Outlook
Kampf's presumed demotion to the Marlies is a stunning turnaround from only a couple years ago where he was seemingly glued to the fourth line and meant to be the defensive shutdown option down the middle.
It means that the Maple Leafs are pretty much set in their lineup and that means that guys like
Calle Jarnkrok and Nick Robertson have earned their place over Kampf as everyday players or depth options.
Kampf's lost placement in the lineup is indicative of what Toronto has tried to do the entire offseason; changing their identity.
The quiet, understated Kampf was a solid addition to a very loud Sheldon Keefe lineup. But with Craig Berube in tow, it's a much different playbook, and one that he isn't a part of anymore.
This is a developing story. More details to come.
