The future of Morgan Rielly as a Toronto Maple Leaf has been confirmed according to a new report.
Although Morgan Rielly is locked into a long-term contract with Toronto, that hasn't avoided rumors about his future as Brad Treliving made clear that the Leafs DNA will "need change", making clear that there will be differences to how the team operates, both on and off the ice.
Rielly could still find himself as a player no longer fitting the team's new dynamic as the longest tenured player for a Leafs team taking a new philosophy forward.
Despite questions over whether or not Rielly fits the Leafs long-term plans, a new report suggests that ultimately it comes down to Rielly to dictate his future.
Morgan Rielly Faces Prospect of Potentially Leaving the Toronto Maple Leafs
A report from TSN Hockey insider Pierre LeBrun makes it clear that despite rumors, Morgan Rielly has no intention of leaving the Toronto Maple Leafs.
Rielly has a no-move clause, meaning he can block any attempt made by the Leafs to move on from him, and stay as long as he wishes.
LeBrun reports Rielly is happy in Toronto and does not wish to waive his NMC, although it's known not if he has been asked to by the team and what his response would be if asked.
Rielly, 31, had seven goals and 41 points in 82 games this season, while facing questions over his consistency which led to rumors about him potentially being scratched temporarily to get him a reset.
As it stands, Morgan Rielly evidently doesn't have much of an interest in leaving Toronto, and it's not very much clear if Rielly wants to head out either, but the Toronto Maple Leafs searching for a new look could end up moving on from Rielly if not now but some point later on.
What Would It Take For Morgan Rielly To Leave The Toronto Maple Leafs?
Morgan Rielly being dealt would ultimately come down to his own choosing, but some factors could entice Rielly to waive his NMC and accept a move if he wishes.
The most obvious move would be a complete restructuring of the roster, tearing everything down and starting out.
A few things would have to happen for that to be the case. First would have to be one or both of
Mitch Marner and
John Tavares being moved on from, most likely the younger Marner more of a catalyst of a possible rebuild.
Both players leaving are a very real option, and Brad Treliving
did not quiet the rumors with having the status of both free agents unclear.
Next would have to be the play of captain
Auston Matthews. Currently, Matthews is facing uncertainty as injuries derailed his season, never looking like the same player he's been in the past, even playing much differently than before as more of a playmaker than a sniper.
Is Matthews cannot reach his prior highs due to his injury problems, that, alongside with the departure of Marner may start to present tough questions about either pushing even harder for top talent, or changing up the team completely and starting over.
Neither are easy options, but if the Leafs were to either struggle in the playoffs yet again, or not make it completely, almost surely do changes commence and may include asking for Rielly to move on to create a new core in Toronto.
As loyal and committed Morgan Rielly is to the Leafs and Toronto, he may come to a point where a move away from the team is not only logical, but best for his career as well.
