An update regarding Max Domi's surgery complications took a scary turn as it was revealed he had severe mobility issues in the aftermath of his procedure.
It was reported earlier this week that Max Domi had undergone surgery in the offseason for help with an unidentified issue he dealt with the entire year. There were complications that arose that put the start of his season in jeopardy, but a new update shows there's a lot more than just the start of his year on the line - it may be his entire season.
Domi's complications are not public knowledge except for the fact they exist, and the team's statement regarding the situation was fairly brief and mentioned a reevaluation period at the start of training camp to see where he's at physically.
It wasn't the positive update we got such as with Auston Matthews' knee surgery, and while some fans may not like everything Domi offers, he's a core part of that locker room and a veteran leader.
Max Domi chose his own surgeon over Toronto's and now his recovery has been turned upside down
Which is why it's absolutely frightening to hear that those complications could impact him for life. According to Steve Simmons, Domi's issues were severe to the point where he actually lost the ability to walk after the procedure:
According to sources, Domi chose his own surgeon to do the operation rather than the one the Maple Leafs had in mind. That's not uncommon with today's modern athlete, and that doesn't affect his insurance status as a Leafs player.
What is uncommon: Something went terribly wrong with the surgery. For public consumption, no one is saying what. Almost every operation on a professional athlete is followed by a press release that indicates that successful surgery has taken place.
Whatever happened here wasn't deemed successful. Apparently, Domi could not walk in the days following surgery, which created significant alarm. His status remains in doubt for the coming season.
That's genuinely terrifying for anyone let alone a professional athlete, and there's a variety of issues that could have caused it. There's no reason to speculate as to the nature, however knowing that it affected him so strongly - and already having a very tough medical history - it's not good.
Toronto was hoping that Domi could return at some point but now his season is in doubt
Look, we have to take a step back for a moment. Domi does not deserve any of this, and all we can hope as fans and good people is to hope he's able to get healthy, and there's no life-changing repercussions. He's already dealing with Type-1 diabetes which is tough to manage as is, and whatever happened here just adds to it.
But needing to shift gears to the business side of things, Toronto was hoping that a training camp evaluation would bring good news even if he wasn't to start the year. A mid-November or December debut is still enough time to be impactful no doubt.
Domi, 31, had 36 points in 80 games last season and finally put up his first double-digit goal season with the Maple Leafs.
If he is unable to play, that means that someone from the AHL could get a look like Luke Haymes or Bo Groulx, or John Chayka could find a cheap veteran free agent or trade package to find his replacement, and Toronto will likely get his LTIR money to work with as well; more money to find help.
But all that matters right now is that Max Domi is on the road to recovery and hope he's able to make an appearance during the 2026-27 season.
Do you think Max Domi will play for the Maple Leafs in 2026-27?
