Canada felt the wrath of a healthy Aleksander Barkov and it's a warning shot to the Maple Leafs as they can't afford to lose out on adding much needed reinforcements.
Team Canada was undefeated at the World Championships until they ran into the buzzsaw that was Aleksander Barkov and Team Finland. Morgan Rielly and John Tavares just got a first-hand look at what to expect when he returns to Florida and it comes with a warning - Toronto can't have a quiet offseason.
Barkov is the best defensive forward in the entire NHL and his trio of Selke trophies stand as proof. A nightmare to play against, Barkov has been instrumental in leading the Panthers to two Stanley Cup titles and cementing themselves as the East's most dangerous team.
Barkov's 2025-26 started miserably, but rebounded into a potential gold medal win
However he missed the entirety of 2025-26 after suffering an injury during training camp, and Florida felt the effects as they plummeted near the basement of the Atlantic - only prevented by Toronto's even bigger free fall.
But now that he's back in the fray and looking to be just as dangerous as ever, Toronto has to make sure they prepare enough for the absolute dominance they are about to encounter.
In 9 games, Barkov has 11 points (3 goals, 8 assists) while also adding a plus-five and playing stellar defensively as per usual. In 2024-25 he also put up great numbers with 71 points in 67 games (20 goals, 51 assists), won 56.5% of his face-offs and had a gaudy 62.6% CF rating.
Knowing that Barkov is healthy, and a group coming back that will also be held up by fresh legs, the Panthers are going to be the team to beat in 2026-27. So if Toronto wants to give themselves the best opportunity to keep pace, they need to match fire with fire.
Toronto can't take the foot off the gas this summer and need to splurge on some key names
Florida has names like Aaron Ekblad, Seth Jones, and Gus Forsling to help the blueline, so Toronto needs to add the same. Darren Raddysh and Vince Dunn would give them the puck movement and power-play help that Ekblad and Jones provide, meanwhile a healthy Chris Tanev is one of the best shutdown defenders in the league.
They also need to shore up their deficiencies which means Morgan Rielly, Simon Benoit, Philippe Myers and others need to be sent out of town and new names with the analytical firepower to change the lineup for the better.
Barkov is an elite two-way player, so Toronto has to bring one in too. That's where a trade for Vincent Trocheck comes in, as they can add a reliable, consistent and impressive defensive centre who can provide that PK help Auston Matthews needs so he can focus on offence.
You also have to factor in that we don't know how guys like Gavin McKenna are going to produce, and they very well could become Barkov's Kryptonite if they are able to find a weakness. There's several moves for John Chayka to make, and he has to entertain all of them.
This year was the one chance Toronto had to capitalize on a broken Panthers team and they didn't. So now, with a full healthy group back in the fold and revenge on their mind, Florida is going to be as nasty as ever.
So the Maple Leafs must be prepared for what lies ahead, or they're going to get left behind.
Do you think the Florida Panthers are the best team in the East now Aleksander Barkov has returned?
