Max Domi is set to be out indefinitely after suffering complications from a procedure to help an injury suffered this past season; a bad sign already for Toronto.

This past season wasn't the best for Max Domi offensive or defensively however with the news that he was injured brings things into a new light. He underwent surgery however experienced complications and is now out indefinitely. With questions about his status going forward, John Chayka just added another thing to his to-do list.

Domi, 31, had 36 points in 80 games this past season, but struggled to keep pace defensively and was an engregiously bad minus-29 to go along with that. There was a debate over if he still had a spot on the team, but with Mats Sundin and John Chayka in charge - he's more than likely staykmh put.

Max Domi suffers offseason complications due to surgery, will be re-evaluated in the coming months

But knowing he was hurt does shed new light on his season, and he actually recently underwent surgery to repair what was ailing him. Though the circumstances of the surgery are unknown, it seems to have gone a bit south.

Domi suffered complications from the surgery and has been ruled out indefinitely, with the team putting out a statement on social media:

Forward Max Domi underwent offseason surgery to address an issue he played through during the 2025-26 season. Due to complications arising from the procedure, Domi will be out indefinitely.

Domi will continue working with the club's medical staff and will be re-evaluated at the start of training camp.

It's an unfortunate turn of events for the veteran forward who was looking for a bounce back season but now with questions about his health heading into 2026-27, that bounce back could be a lost cause before it even started.

What the Maple Leafs can do if Max Domi is out to start the 2026-27 season

Well, if Domi is up in the air for the start of the season, and things aren't exactly going great then Toronto needs a back up plan. We have no idea how the rest of the roster lines up, but Domi is likely either the 3C or 3W for the time being, and you need someone who can replace that spot in the lineup.

Good thing Toronto has more than enough bodies to fill that role. Luke Haymes, Bo Groulx, and also Jacob Quillan and Ryan Tverberg (though both are RFA).

Not to mention there could be a guy like Vinni Lettieri who gets signed to an NHL contract and earns a bottom-six spot due to his torrid stretch with the Marlies.

Or John Chayka goes the free agent/trade route and use one of his later picks or some that surplus cap space to sign cheap replacement for the interim. Jack Roslovic, Sam Lafferty, Noel Acciari, and Kasperi Kapanen are all available for cheap and may only require couple million dollars for a year of service.

There are some options for the Maple Leafs if Domi is out, and while fans may not exactly weep over the news, it's still unfortunate as Toronto is bitten by the injury bug before the season even begins.
