Easton Cowan scored with less than 20 seconds to go in Toronto's do-or-die elimination gamed helped them move into the AHL Eastern Conference Finals.
With 10 seconds left to go in the Toronto Marlies do-or-die elimination game against the Cleveland Monsters in the North Division Finals, Easton Cowan decided to put the team on his back by scoring the go-ahead goal and helping them secure a berth in the Eastern Conference Finals and moving them one step closer to the Calder Cup.
Easton Cowan saddles up and helps the Marlies advance with only 10 seconds left
It was a wonderful display of heart from the Marlies as they were backed by a strong effort from top to bottom. But nothing felt as good as seeing Easton Cowan take up his cowboy moniker by scoring a last-second goal and helping the Maple Leafs ride off into the sunset.
After Vinni Lettieri was set up in the slot, he fanned on a shot but managed to sneak a half-hearted pass over to Cowan who deposited the puck past goaltender Zach Sawchenko:

Sawchenko's heartbreaking reaction contrasts with Cowan's immense pride and excitement and it's apropos that the Toronto Maple Leafs' best prospect right now is the one who put them ahead. It was his eighth point of the postseason as he sits tied for fourth on the team in scoring with Ryan Tverberg.
This has to make the entire Maple Leafs organization feel fantastic knowing that not only do the Marlies advance but Cowan has proven yet again that he is clutch when it counts and while he isn't blowing everyone away - he's coming through when they need him the most.
The Maple Leafs pipeline just sent it's strongest message to John Chayka
It wasn't just Cowan who was great, as William Villeneuve added yet another assist to give him 11 points this postseason and he looks set to really fight for a spot in the 2026-27 Maple Leafs lineup.
Artur Akhtyamov put in another strong performance stopping 22 of 24 shots and pushing his numbers to 7-4-0 with a 2.18 GAA and .922 SV%. Jacob Quillan was crucial in getting the puck to Lettieri in the waning seconds of the game allowing Cowan to score, and he's been a spark plug all postseason.
John Chayka is going to be going through his list of potential signings and trade candidates however he has to be concerned that if he doesn't start giving these guys chances then he probably needs trade them. That could bring a decent haul but it's hard to imagine seeing Toronto throwing away more future prospects because they just decided not to use them.
So Chayka has to make sure that he gives everyone equal opportunity and ensure that those who are performing in the AHL get their flowers and a chance to succeed. You never know who can show up and contribute, and as we've seen with players like Matthew Knies - their impact can be incredible.
For now though, the focus for the Marlies is heading to the Eastern Conference Finals and trying to get one step closer to the Calder Cup, and the Cowboy is ready to duel with whoever comes next.
Do you think Easton Cowan is going to win the Calder Cup this season?
