Auston Matthews and William Nylander are demanding three things from the Maple Leafs this offseason and it could dictate their future whether they listen or not.

Toronto's top two stars have made it clear that the team needs get a playmaking winger to complement the top line, find a brand new 2C and fix the blueline. If things weren't tough enough for John Chayka, the future of Auston Matthews and William Nylander will become even more unclear.

As the offseason kicks off for the Toronto Maple Leafs, they are going to have a very interesting time starting with the NHL Draft. Besides Gavin McKenna the team has a few picks they can use to steal the next diamond the rough, or package them together to bring in a player that can help out immediately.

Maple Leafs need to improve on a variety of areas according to Matthews and Nylander

But beyond that, there's a lot of work to do with the roster which includes making the blueline a lot stronger, faster and younger meanwhile Auston Matthews would love to have someone who could elevate him back to the old dominant force he was only a couple years ago - and that's not a request.

Matthews has been pretty demanding this offseason as he wants to see real change in the Toronto organization but it isn't just him according to Darren Dreger. William Nylander also expressed the need to improve in several areas of the game and echoed the same sentiment as his captain:

The #2 center; winger; the blueline...they need a right shot, those are the things that Auston Matthews and William Nylander, didn't request, but that was their view, their opinion on how they could improve.

This sounds less like what can you do and more here's what you need to do and for the two superstars in hockey's biggest market, that's not really a big request given how much Toronto has invested in them.

It shouldn't be too hard for the Maple Leafs to acquiesce to Matthews and Nylander

I don't think Dreger is telling us anything we don't already know, as improving Toronto in those regards isn't exactly brand new information. But it does stress the urgency on John Chayka's behalf given that he doesn't really have much leash to work with. If Matthews and Nylander don't want the plan that Chayka has and wants to institute their own; there's already a conflict of interest.

Matthews and Nylander don't really have an issue when it comes to the entirety of the lineup, but when it comes to pieces that genuinely contribute to the overall success of the team, there are holes needing filled.

Morgan Rielly can't be the #1 defenceman anymore and there needs to be a true puck mover. Sure you aren't getting Cale Makar but if the Maple Leafs went hard after a Dougie Hamilton or even splurge for Brandt Clarke then it would help immensely.

That right there instantly improves the lineup, and getting a winger for Matthews like Alex Tuch may be a great option. The two are familiar with each other, Tuch can offer the offensive and defensive support and he won't be afraid to protect Matthews at any turn. It also gives Matthews someone stable, and not a rotating cast of support.

The 2C is a little tougher but if the team were to put in an offer sheet for someone like Mavrik Bourque who is coming into an RFA year with a Dallas team unable to afford him, then it's a smart and cheap way to give them youth while helping Nylander get that secondary piece he can build new chemistry with.

It's a lot of work for Chayka but these demands aren't really a hard bargain for Toronto. They have the cap space and direction from their captain and his right-hand man, so it's time to get those pieces in the lineup sooner than later.
