Martin Jones reportedly open to re-signing with Leafs this summer
Toronto Maple Leafs goaltender Martin Jones probably doesn't figure into the team's long-term plans, but he has indicated that he is willing to re-sign with the team.
Leafs writer Josh Kloke recently interviewed Jones as part of a story about the team's goaltending situation. Ilya Samsonov will not be coming back to the team as he hits free agency and Joseph Woll is not yet a proven NHL starter. Furthermore, he has not proven to be capable of staying healthy for an entire season. As a result, there may be room for Jones to re-sign with the team.
"Jones would prefer to play more games (what goaltender wouldn't) but crucially, Jones and his family enjoyed life in Toronto and appreciate living in bigger cities. Jones also formed a decent relationship with Joseph Woll this season and having seven more seasons of NHL experience took to the mentor role easily. It sounds like Jones would be open to returning to Toronto. Given his familiarity, if the Leafs can convince Jones to take on the No. 3 job on a similar-ish cap hit next season, it feels like a no-brainer."
Jones was forced to sign with the Leafs as their number three netminder last summer after several years of poor performances with the Sharks and Kraken. However, he ultimately got into 21 regular season games with the team due to injuries to both Woll and Samsonov. He played quite well, going 11-7-1 with a .908 save percentage.

The Leafs will probably want to bring in a bona fide number one netminder to shelter Woll next season. Martin Jones certainly is not that. However, he could sign as the third netminder with the team again, should he be willing to accept that role. He could get better offers from other teams though as he proved to be a capable backup once again.
