The Toronto Maple Leafs are currently debating on a new coach, however Elliotte Friedman believes the troubles stretch well beyond just Craig Berube.

Look, let's be honest. The Toronto Maple Leafs are not really in a good spot right now. Coming off a 4-0 loss to Washington, rumors about their head coach being fired, and debate about their leaders being fit for the job; there's not a lot to be excited for.
While there isn't anything that has outwardly said that Craig Berube is being fired, or that the team is going to make any drastic changes, but if they don't do something soon then not only will the season be unsalvageable, but they may lose some really dedicated fans.

Toronto's issues lay beyond Craig Berube says Elliotte Friedman

It's something that was a topic of discussion on The FAN Hockey Show on Friday, as Elliotte Friedman was a guest and touched on the turmoil in Leaf Nation.
But Friedman didn't just stop short of saying this is a Berube issue, but went philosophical on listeners, mentioning that looking at it through a pragmatic lens shows deeper issues ahead:
I just feel we are heading into a territory where this doesn't turn around they need to ask some real hard questions about themselves.

Today was about the coach, last night the post-game...the quotes come across on social media and you're like 'Be careful, the written word doesn't come across.' but you look at how he looked; it came across like it came across.

The questions, if they go existential, are going to be much bigger than Craig Berube. If this doesn't turn around we are going into some real crazy territory here.
Yikes. That's not a good sign for anyone in Toronto however it's hard to know exactly what the crazy territory entails but we can certainly take a couple of guesses.

How crazy can things actually get in Toronto?

Well, for starters they can fire Berube. Okay, you've brought in a new coach. Now what? This roster isn't built for speed, and they are slower and older than the majority of the league.
So do you then blow it all up? Does crazy mean that names like Morgan Rielly, Bobby McMann or even Anthony Stolarz get moved? Does the new head coach make Auston Matthews the 2C? Is he potentially on the block?
The team is in a weird spot. They don't have enough assets to really rebuild with the pieces they have, but are genuinely too talented to be putting together such an abysmal series of performances.
If that doesn't solve things, there's only one place left to go and that's Brad Treliving, and if he doesn't do something to at least put forth an effort to improve the team and make some type of impactful decision; he's next on the chopping block.
We don't know what is going to happen, and there's also the potential that simply nothing happens, they stand pat, and we're all speculating for nothing.
But if things are going to change in Toronto then something has to happen, and it sounds like it might be an issue buried deep within the Maple Leafs system.
