New GM Brad Treliving has plenty on his plate as his team prepares for the draft and free agency, but it now looks like he'll have one less decision to make regarding one of his team's prospects.
Semyon Der-Arguchintsev is a 2018 3rd-round pick of the Maple Leafs, and once held great promise as a prospect.
Although his nationality is Russian, Der-Arguchintsev has spent most of his junior and professional career in North America.
He spent 17 games with Torpedo Nizhny Novgorod during the Covid season on a loan from the Maple Leafs, but it now appears that he'll be returning there for good.
Der-Arguchintsev only appeared in one NHL game during his tenure with the Maple Leafs organization but managed to find decent success in the AHL, where he almost managed to score at a point-per-game pace this past season.
At just 22 years of age, he still has the potential to be an NHL player, but has decided to continue his career in Russia. If the Maple Leafs choose to extend a qualifying offer to Der-Arguchintsev, they will retain his rights for the foreseeable future.
Perhaps after a successful year in the KHL, Der-Arguchintsev could choose to come back to North America and try again.
