The move came as Mark Giordano became injured again last night against the Arizona Coyotes. The injury seemingly accelerated the process as Brad Treliving looks to continue to add depth to his depleted blueline. He was able to get the former Leafs defenseman back for less than league minimum salary thanks to Carolina retaining part of his salary in addition to the Ducks own retention. However, he did have to give up an additional 4th round pick to make this happen.
The Leafs now have just four picks in the 2025 draft, all in the 5th round or later. However, this will not stop the team from making more moves.
Tverberg is a somewhat interesting prospect. He was drafted in the 7th round by the Leafs in 2020 and is playing his first season in the AHL this year. He has 8 goals and 28 points in 35 games for the Marlies, largely playing in a depth role. While those numbers are pretty decent, Tverberg is already 22, leaving little room for further development. As a former 7th round pick, he likely won't be considered a huge get for any team. Scott Wheeler of the Athletic has his as the Leafs' 9th best prospect on the 28th-ranked prospect pool in the league. As such, he is unlikely to become a regular NHL contributor.
