The Maple Leafs lost out on top goaltender prospect Austin Elliott after a false report of him going to Toronto seemed to have sparked some premature excitement.

The connection between the Toronto Maple Leafs and London Knights runs deep. Not only has the team drafted several Knights in the past, but seemingly always have a hand in finding their next star from one of the most accomplished junior teams of all-time.
They already have Easton Cowan and Landon Sim, and could have added star goalie prospect Austin Elliott; and it seems like they had after the OHL reported he earned a spot with the Leafs this summer at training camp.

Austin Elliott not going to Toronto, will play for Dallas before heading back to NCAA

Well, for as much excitement as that report brought, it brings equally as much disappointment after it was revealed by The Athletic's Joshua Kloke that Elliott heading to Toronto had no basis in reality and he personally had no idea:
London Knights goalie Austin Elliott tells The Athletic he has *not* been invited to Leafs training camp.

Elliott will attend Dallas Stars development camp. No plans right now to attend Leafs camp and no idea how the Leafs rumour started either. - Joshua Kloke

Instead Kloke says that Elliott will instead attend the Dallas Stars training camp before heading to the NCAA.

Who is Austin Elliott?

Elliott, 21, has been unbelievable over the past two seasons, and put up an absurd 32-1-0 record with London this season. He also posted a 2.10 GAA and .924 SV% along with three shutouts.
He found his way to London after being placed on waivers from Saskatoon of the WHL before being claimed by Barrie; then traded to London. His performance this season allowed him to earn a spot in the NCAA with the University of Massachusetts-Lowell next year.
The nephew of former NHL goaltender Brian Elliott, it seems the goaltending gene runs deep in the family, and if he can replicate at least part of his uncle's career in the NHL; that's a rousing success.
But for now, it seems that Elliott will have his chance to make it in the NHL one day, just not with the Maple Leafs.
