Brad Treliving admits he's not happy with the current Leafs roster, and is still banking on finding an upgrade before the season opens up.

After a difficult offseason that has seen the Toronto Maple Leafs struggle to upgrade their roster in free agency, leading to the team looking at any remaining options, Leafs GM Brad Treliving says that the team is still trying to find a key forward addition.
Brad Treliving said after the departure of Mitch Marner to the Vegas Golden Knights that they haven't found the right player as a high-end replacement and the hole on the roster is still a question mark for Toronto.

Brad Treliving Admits the Maple Leafs Roster Still Isn't Where He Wants It

Brad Treliving told reporters at today's press conference before the Leafs training camp that finding a top-six forward to replace Marner is still a priority.
The Leafs GM was open about the state of the team and their hole on the top-six, but assured to reporters that their need is still one they're looking to fill.
It's not from lack of trying ... you're always looking to improve. League-wide, it was a slower summer. But yeah, we're looking.

Toronto had added a fill in Matias Maccelli, a reclamation project who's looking to return to his top-six potential, but is not the upgrade that the Leafs are banking on replacing Marner.
With a lack of free agency options, the Toronto Maple Leafs indicate their answer could come in the trade market as a possible solution to their problems.

A GM's Honesty Signals More Moves Could Be Coming

Brad Treliving says the Toronto Maple Leafs plan is to continue to be active, but a dwindling free agency class means a trade may be the way Toronto goes to get their top-six forward.
The top remaining free agent, Jack Roslovic, is a player still linked to Toronto and is still a forward who has been considered an option, but Toronto appears more ambitious.
Treliving dispelled rumors that Toronto was trying to sign Dillon Dube, saying that isn't where their focus is in terms of building their roster.
One major block to an instant deal with a player is the fact that superstar Connor McDavid is a free agent at the end of the season, and hasn't signed an extension with the Edmonton Oilers, and has sidestepped questions about his future.
Brad Treliving says that the Toronto Maple Leafs are not done hoping to get a top forward, and are adamant that it's a goal they'd like to see happen, with the hope they can upgrade their roster the way they wanted to before free agency opened.
