The Toronto Maple Leafs might be ready to pounce on a potential trade according to NHL Insider John Shannon, as he believes the NHL offseason is ready to pop off.

Heading into the late stages of July, the Toronto Maple Leafs have been fairly quiet since the beginning of the month, and though there's still plenty of time left, fans are starting to get a little antsy.
However, it seems to be a league-wide issue, as most of the NHL teams have gone pretty quiet as they figure out the next steps for their offseason strategy, and also giving players time to get acclimated before the start of the season.
But things have to pick up, and pick up they will according to NHL Insider John Shannon.

Rumblings Around the League Point to Imminent Leafs Action

Appearing on Inside Sports, Shannon was under the belief that the NHL is going to pick things up soon, with more deals and the final free agent signings coming in the next few weeks, with August expected to be busy:
I fully expect that first week of August we will start to hear and feel, if there are any tweaks that are gonna be made...I think that's probably fair to say for all 32 teams.

There are still several free agents on the market like Jack Roslovic, Matt Grzelcyk, Victor Olofsson, and Jiri Kiviranta meanwhile names like Jason Robertson, Calle Jarnkrok, and Erik Karlsson have all been linked to deals that could happen in August.
With Toronto needing to make a move, this signals that Brad Treliving is gathering as much intel as possible before striking next month.

Could Toronto Be the First Team to Strike in August?

Speaking of, though he tends to make a lot of blockbuster moves in July, Brad Treliving has a history of making moves later in the summer, with the biggest arguably being Sean Monahan's deal where he was shipped off with a first-rounder for future considerations.
Yes, you read that right, he was traded WITH a first rounder.
Now, that's not to say Treliving is going to trade someone like William Nylander or Easton Cowan, but he definitely could be open to moving a player like Nick Robertson; who might not have a place in the lineup.
He could also deal Ben Danford too, plus Dennis Hildeby makes for an intriguing goaltending piece.
He might be able to sway someone like Pittsburgh to part with a Rickard Rakell or Bryan Rust; not a landscape changing deal, but one that makes Toronto better.
Plus, they are going to need to be fast considering they don't have a tom of assets, so the more frequent they can present offers it gives them a chance to strike.
While we want quality no doubt, you can never have too much quantity when it comes to offers, and that goes for both guys like Roslovic and potential trades.
They aren't desperate (yet) so there might be a bit more time for the team to figure out what to do going forward.
But whether it's a free agent or a trade piece, Toronto is poised and ready to strike.
Whether or not that's the first strike remains to be seen.
