Maple Leafs announce their first eight cuts of training camp

The Toronto Maple Leafs wasted no time in trimming down the roster, cutting eight players already and assigning them to their respective junior clubs.

On Wednesday afternoon, the Toronto Maple Leafs made eight cuts to their training camp roster, assisting four players to their respective junior clubs, meanwhile they also released all four players they brought in for an amateur tryout:

The Maple Leafs have returned the following players to their respective junior teams following the 2026 NHL Prospect Challenge:

Rylan Fellinger (Flint)
Brody Pepoy (Saginaw)
Patriks Plūmiņš (Chicoutimi)
Cooper Williams (Saskatoon)

Meanwhile all those who were added on an amateur tryout this past summer were also released, including Parker Vaughan, who was brought back after development camp:

The following players were also released from their Amateur Try-Out Agreements:

Sebastian Charvát
Matyas Man
Parker Vaughan
Nic Whitehead

Fellinger heads back to the Flint Firebirds of the OHL, as does Pepoy who heads to Saginaw. Plumins finds himself back in the QMJHL with Chicoutimi, meanwhile Williams heads back to Saskatoon - one of several Blades players drafted over the past two seasons.

The remaining four released in Charvat, Man, Vaughan, and Whitehead will all either head back to their respective teams, or find a place elsewhere to sign.

What does this mean for these prospects and their chances with the Maple Leafs?

Well, for now, it means their path to the Maple Leafs is cut off early, as they won't get a chance to impress any of the coaches at camp, however there were a couple bright spots coming out of the Prospect Showcase.

Pepoy scored a nice goal against Winnipeg, and Plumins played a fairly strong game where he was able to showcase his lateral movement and post-to-post ability. But other than that, having some seasoning in the juniors could lead them into a future deal.

Obviously there were going to be a ton of roster cuts coming in the next couple of weeks, and the Maple Leafs, who were already in a logjam, had to make an early decision. It's not the last, but it was the first and all these prospects can do is play their best in hopes of earning a longer look next summer.
