Maple Leafs GM John Chayka addresses the media on Wednesday on a variety of topics as the team opened up their training camp with their team marketing day. He spoke about various injuries including statuses of Max Domi and Chris Tanev, but he also made note of two serious situations evolving in the organization.
Chayka announced that Marlies defenseman Cade Webber underwent elbow reconstruction surgery during the offseason, and that he is currently working through it via rehab; though he is going to be taking things on a month-to-month basis, with hopes of returning this season.

However, he also brought forth the unfortunate news that Marlies defenseman William Villeneuve had undergone ACL reconstruction surgery during the offseason, and his timeline is unknown but hopes it'll be at some point this season:

Villeneuve, 24, appeared in three games for the Maple Leafs last season, recording no points and a plus-one in 17:20 TOI. The long-time Marlies blueliner had 30 points in 61 regular season games last year for Toronto, but exploded for 23 points in 24 playoff games including a franchise-record 21 assists.
Drafted 122nd overall in 2020, Villeneuve has registered 120 points in 226 games for the Marlies but last season was the first time he managed to find himself in a game for the Maple Leafs despite great numbers and numerous call-ups that went nowhere.
Why an ACL reconstruction affects William Villeneuve's NHL future
This is where Villeneuve's injury and recovery becomes an issue. With him being a mobile defender who relies on his skating and quick movements, having a reconstructed ACL is going to be a tough recovery.
While he may be able to get back on the ice in a few months, it's getting back in the swing of game action and this current issue almost assuredly puts his NHL career on hold. He's going to need a lot more time to get acclimated to the fast-paced style, and he can't necessarily get that experience at season's end.
If he can't show that he's able to bring himself back to the level he was once at, and his offensive game slips then his path to the NHL just got harder, and with other prospects getting the opportunity to play themselves into the conversation - he may be on his last legs in Toronto.
It's unfortunate that the Marlies are going to be down such a key part of their lineup, and the Maple Leafs lose out on adding a solid player if injuries cause concerns. But what matters most is Villeneuve's health, and we can only hope his recovery is as smooth as can be.
