Maple Leafs open training camp with four injury concerns as Max Domi fails physical

John Chayka updated fans and the media on the status of Max Domi, as well as other players ahead of the Toronto Maple Leafs opening their training camp.

Wednesday was the Maple Leafs' address to the media before they ended up taking the ice for training camp. In a day full of excitement, there was some big news coming from the Maple Leafs front office.

GM John Chayka addressed the media on Wednesday morning and talked about a variety of topics however the main takeaway was on the injury front, most notably - Max Domi.

Chayka explained to reporters that there were some key injury developments in the Maple Leafs organization, but the biggest one was the fact that Max Domi had failed his physical, and is still going to remain out indefinitely after offseason surgery complications:

There was also the news that Morgan Rielly was dealing with a viral infection though should be ready to go for opening night which is still about two weeks away. Two pressing concerns though are in the pipeline though, as William Villeneuve and Cade Webber are going to be out long-term.

However turning focus back to Domi, despite seeing him able to make appearances in public and take part of some offseason activities, he's nowhere near ready. We know he was going to be evaluated at the start of camp - so today - and if he's failed now then there's seriously no indication when or if he'll be back.

What's next for the Maple Leafs and Max Domi

Well, for now it's a waiting game. TSN's Mark Masters revealed that Domi would actually be addressing things in the coming days, so that's something to keep an eye on. While he may not go into explicit details, it may give us a better clue as to his future with the team.

What's next for Toronto though is to gather as much intel as possible and confirm that Domi is going to be out either the majority of the season or the entirety. That way, they can move him to the LTIR and open up some cap space, allowing them to sign Nick Blankenburg who they brought in on a PTO.

It's hard to know exactly what the future beyond 2026-27 holds, but as we reported previously, it could be something that affects Domi's career as a whole, and it may be the very last time we see Domi in a Maple Leafs jersey.

An unfortunate end to a player whose name holds a special place in the hearts of Leafs Nation.

While Domi never may have gotten to the heights he reached in his debut season with the club, or find his old scoring spark, he was a dedicated leader on and off the ice and beloved in the locker room and it's a rough way for him to end his time with the team he grew up watching.
