Elliotte Friedman reports that Anaheim placed Rodwin Dionicio on waivers as the season creeps up, so could the Maple Leafs be looking at the waiver wire this year?

The NHL season is often filled with several different types of transactions that teams utilize throughout the season. Trades, free agents, call-ups, demotions, buyouts, the list goes on and on.
One of the main things teams tend to use is the waiver wire, a way to push a player they don't really want on their main roster and allow other teams to put in a claim for them and deal with their contract, or if they clear; send them down.
Waivers are also used as a way to terminate a contract, as a player needs to be put through the ringer first before they are able to be let go, and the reasons for termination can vary from mutual agreement to a dysfunctional dismissal.

The First Waiver Move of September and What It Signals Across the NHL

For the Anaheim Ducks, it seems to be more of the latter with regards to Rodwin Dionicio. NHL Insider Elliotte Friedman reported that the defenseman was placed on waivers for the purpose of a contract termination:
He cleared waivers as nobody wanted him, and now the Ducks will be looking to make him a free agent as soon as possible.
While it is unconfirmed, there may be a potential for Dionicio to head overseas to Europe, but he will need to make sure he impresses and potentially starts to figure out his game.
Dionicio, 21, was drafted 129th overall by the Ducks in 2023 and spent last season between the AHL and Switzerland.

How Early Waiver Moves Could Impact the Maple Leafs' Depth This Fall

The Toronto Maple Leafs are certainly a team who may be using waivers as a way to kind of clear that logjam on their roster. They could put someone like David Kampf or Calle Jarnkrok through waivers to open up some space, or someone like a Henry Thrun could find himself as a last minute wire addition.
The team needs roster and cap space, and if the team can't find a buyer for Kampf or Jarnkrok then it might be best to put them through and see what happens. Teams may not want to trade for them, but they won't mind bringing them aboard without losing assets.
But they also have guys like Philippe Myers, Dakota Mermis (already gone through waivers twice last year), and Travis Boyd who are waiver eligible, so these names might also be on the chopping block.
It's great that Brad Treliving added a lot of bodies to the team this offseason, but he might have added a couple too many. There's going to be a move made soon, and it might end up leading to a player being waived through no fault of their own.
