NHL Insider Elliotte Friedman gave a mid-summer update regarding Jack Roslovic and explained the Maple Leafs are front and center trying to sign him.
The news surrounding the Toronto Maple Leafs and potential targets this summer is hot and heavy. Not a day goes by where we hear silence, and they've
been connected to some pretty big names, but comes down to asset management.
Toronto Still Keeping Eyes On Jack Roslovic
Sure there is still some time for the team to make a move, however and one name who keeps popping up this summer is Jack Roslovic. Still unsigned, he would certainly add a scoring punch to the Leafs and won't come at too high a cost.
It looks like the Maple Leafs are still in play for the forward, and
according to Elliotte Friedman, the team is trying desperately to move enough money out to sign him before someone else:
Another player we talked about for Toronto was Jack Roslovic; there's still a few teams looking at him; I've heard 5 or 6 [teams]; we know with Toronto, they're trying to move money around
This goes along with the report that the Maple Leafs weren't done making moves even with the re-signing of Nick Robertson and an even smaller cap ceiling.
Toronto's Work Not Done Despite Brad Treliving's Efforts
But it does involve getting rid of some dead weight in
Calle Jarnkrok and
David Kampf. While not bad players by any means, Toronto has shifted their philosophy and the two just don't fit with the new-look lineup.
There are other bonuses to adding Roslovic too, as not only are you getting a potential 15-20 goal scorer year after year, but he has familiarity playing alongside
Auston Matthews, and if he can replicate last season it's an absolute steal.
In 81 games for the Hurricanes last season,
Roslovic had 39 points (22 goals, 17 assists) which tied his career high in goals; he's not the most physical force on the ice but with
Matthew Knies on the top line with him, he should be fine.
We know that
Roslovic is looking for a multi-year deal with an AAV of $3-million, which is not the most expensive deal but will facilitate Toronto making room, and there's only limited time left; so it's crunch time for Treliving.
For Friedman, who is the foremost NHL Insider on the block, what he says holds a lot of truth. If Toronto is going after Roslovic, they certainly will field as good an offer as anyone.
But the question of it being enough only remains to be seen.
