Auston Matthews says that he's poised to be dominant for Team USA at the Olympics, and avenge their Four Nations loss.

Team USA lost the Gold Medal game at the Four Nations to Canada, a loss that he's looking to overcome at the upcoming Olympics held in Turin, Italy.
Not only does Matthews want to win, he wants to prove the Americans are now the best on the biggest international stage.
Matthews is hoping he can return back to Toronto with an Olympic Gold for his home country, and Leafs fans will be hoping that whatever confidence he brings to Italy will come with him to Toronto as well.

What Auston Matthews Said About Chasing Olympic Gold

Matthews, who lost in the Gold Medal game of the Four Nations Faceoff, says that he's looking forward to the 2026 Winter Olympics, and is hoping to come away with gold this time around, he told NHL.com.
The Olympics is a bit of a ways away, but still, everybody's kind of got their mind on that just because of the importance that the Olympics brings to your country, the sport in general and just the opportunity to do that.

I think there is definitely a lot of motivation for that and from losing that game. But I think we showed throughout that tournament we're right there with those guys, and we feel like we're the best hockey country in the world, and so it's going to be exciting to have an opportunity to prove that again.
Matthews was on the ice as then-Leafs teammate Mitch Marner made the pass to Connor McDavid that netted the win for Canada and secured gold, with Matthews and the Americans settling for silver.

How His Comments Send a Message to the Maple Leafs Locker Room

Auston Matthews may have been focused on team USA when he spoke about the Olympics, but it reveals the hunger he has to win, which will almost surely carry over to the Leafs.
Matthew Knies is one player on the shortlist for team USA, and could instill some chemistry between him and Matthews if he makes the roster, and Matthews' confidence could rub off on him.
Matthews said in the interview that he is feeling better after recovering from an injury that took him to miss time last season, and made him struggle at times upon his return.
Toronto will need their captain to be a leader in the dressing room and have the passion to take charge and motivate the team to win and play at 100%.
Needing to avenge a painful moment themselves, Matthews will have the chance to overcome a difficult past and find a way to win both on the international stage and for the Stanley Cup.
