A former Toronto Maple Leafs development player has emerged with the Winnipeg Jets ahead of rookie camp.
As the Toronto Maple Leafs look at their rookie camp roster, they could bring in players who weren't drafted or signed by the team, but may get a chance to
showcase their value.
Development camp prospects Tanner Adams and Owen Conrad could be among some players returning for the rookie showcase, but one player will not be among them.
Which Former Leafs Prospect Just Resurfaced in Winnipeg
Former Toronto Maple Leafs tryout prospect Reggie Newman has joined the Winnipeg Jets for their rookie camp.
Newman was with the Leafs at Development Camp, having joined as a free agent, having played last season with the Victoria Royals of the Western Hockey League, having 10 goals, 23 assists, and 33 points in 60 games.
The 6'2 Newman is a defensive power winger who spent last season at Development Camp with the Utah Hockey Club. He also got an invite the year prior with the Arizona Coyotes. Newman also played in Victoria with Leafs draft pick Brandon Lisowsky.
In what should be his final WHL year, Newman could potentially find himself agreeing to an NCAA signing after he's done in Juniors.
Potential New Prospect Additions the Maple Leafs Could Consider Next
The Toronto Maple Leafs themselves have a few options they could add to their rookie camp with the chance at a potential contract and look with the organization.
Toronto already invited former Blackhawks fourth rounder Alex Pharand to their rookie camp, and could
earn himself a contract if he does well with the team.
Dominic James has been a player who
has been discussed by fans as a player who could be of interest. James was a sixth-round pick of Chicago and spent the past four years with the University of Minnesota-Duluth.
If James is not signed, one OHL name who could be of interest to fill out the roster is Mason Zebeski. The Brampton Steelheads forward had 14 goals and 32 points in 58 games, and was at the Penguins dev camp. If Pittsburgh isn't bringing him on, he could be a valuable pickup for Toronto.
More likely is Toronto focuses on their current prospects, and while they could very well bring him back outside faces, the rookie tournament may be a showcase of their existing talent, with one or two potential non-contracted players contending for a greater look later on.
