Ever since entering the NHL back in 2016-17 and scoring four goals on debut, Auston Matthews has been one of the most scrutinized players in the entire league, with constant comparisons to Edmonton's Connor McDavid.
Two of the league's biggest stars
Whether you prefer Matthews or McDavid, there's no doubting that both have been off to incredible starts in their career, and while McDavid had a big 2022-23 season, he's not caught up to Auston in one big statistic.
Despite a 'down' year, No. 34 still managed to compile a season of 40 goals and 85 points, taking his tally to 299 goals in just 481 games played thus far in the NHL, even with the constant wrist injury.
One major edge for Matthews
In that time since his arrival, no one in the league has put the puck in the back of the net like Matthews, as he sits 2 goals ahead of the legendary Alex Ovechkin, as well as 12 ahead of the Oilers captain, who many consider the best player in the NHL.
On top of that, Matthews has done most of his work at 5-on-5, once again leading the league with 223, 11 clear of McDavid, and if he can get healthy again in 2023-24, expect another incredible season, and while he may not get to 60 again, anything close to that will be huge for this Leafs team.
