The Toronto Maple Leafs have engaged with William Nylander in extension talks this off-season, but with little traction in recent times, it appears the potential of a big trade is only growing.

A Western Canadian team

Nylander has seemingly been linked to every team in the NHL at this point in trade talks, and now one rumour that seems to be heating up again, according to Eklund of Hockey Buzz is the deal to send Nylander to the Calgary Flames.

According to his reporting, there have been whispers of a deal centred around Nylander for defenceman Noah Hanifin, and given Brad Treliving's history with Hanifin and the Flames, it's one that makes plenty of sense.

A Calgary kid

Another reason why this move makes sense is the fact that Nylander is from Calgary, given his father played for the team, and with a need on their top line and an abundance of blue liners, the biggest need for Toronto, this potential move makes more and more sense.

Like all rumours, take it with a grain of salt until genuine contact has been made between the two teams, but given the fact that Nylander's extension isn't going anywhere and the needs for both Calgary and Toronto, this is arguably the best deal for both teams.
