Mitch Marner Emerges as a Lock to Win NHL Award
After two-straight Selke Awards, Partice Bergeron has now officially announced his retirement from the NHL, and now, someone has to succeed him as the top two-way player in the league. Enter Mitch Marner.
Top two-way winger
While Marner isn't the type of physical threat that many would associate with being a top two-way player, he has shown plenty of ability on both ends throughout the past few years, finishing third in Selke voting a year ago.
Now, without Bergeron in his way, The Hockey Writers have put together a top-five list of players ready to supplant him, and it appears that Marner is the perfect candidate.
Selke winner?
Not only did Marner finish with a career high 99 points a season ago, finishing over 90 points for the third time in his career, but he also showed elite flashes on the defensive end and on the penalty kill.
Over the last three years, Marner leads the NHL in penalty kill takeaways at 45, while sitting second in shorthanded points, and with his elite puck retrieval skills, there's no doubting that he should be considered a lock for the Selke this season.
