Matthews last season broke the Leafs record for the quickest to 700 points done in just 607 games, breaking a record set only months earlier by Mitch Marner who did so in 622 games.
Matthews spoke earlier in the season on being in the conversation with Sundin among the Leafs greats, calling it an honor to be included alongside him and other legends who wore Toronto's jersey.
It's special just to be in the same sentence as (Sundin). Obviously guys like him and a number of others that came before us paved the way. I've worn the jersey and I think we all take a lot of pride in wearing the jersey and realize how special it is. So it definitely means a lot. - Auston Matthews
Mats Sundin congratulated Matthews personally on moving ahead of him on the Leafs all-time list, calling it "a treat" for fans seeing the record be broken.
Matthews also moves up to 92nd on he NHL's all-time goals list with goal 421.
