Auston Matthews had his meeting with John Chayka and Mats Sundin, and made it known to the team he has one goal in mind.

The long-awaited meeting between Auston Matthews and the new front office of John Chayka and Mats Sundin went very well according to Elliotte Friedman. Matthews gave his commitment to the team, and it seems the team will do whatever it takes to give him what he needs to win.

Finally, after weeks of waiting, the Toronto Maple Leafs front office has made contact with Auston Matthews. It was something that was of the utmost priority for John Chayka and crew, especially knowing that the captain has a lot of requests heading into the season.

Matthews and Maple Leafs have solid first meeting ahead of offseason question marks

Already dealing with a roster strip down, the 2026 Draft, free agency and finding a new coach, the last thing that Chayka needs is Matthews being unwilling to compromise or work with the team, but luckily for him all is smooth on that end.

According to Elliotte Friedman's 32 Thoughts podcast, the meeting with Matthews and the Maple Leafs went well and that the superstar forward reiterated that he wants to win in Toronto, and the team is willing to run with that as much as Matthews needs:

I the last week there was a lengthy Zoom call with Matthews and Chayka and Mats Sundin. It was their first in depth conversation. They have to hire a coach, make moves, change the roster; they aren't asking for his approval...but it was the first time they could talk about what they think.

I heard it was a positive meeting. Right now we're watching the smoke signals, anything problematic? I checked with as many people; right now it's in a good place between Matthews and the organization.

He has indicated he wants to win in Toronto and that's the message he has reiterated and that they are going with.

That's great news for the Maple Leafs and their fanbase as it seems that whatever game plan they are working with is appealing to the captain and he is willing to see things through. He never strayed from wanting to win in Toronto; he just wants the team to build a winner before it's too late.

Toronto didn't need to see Matthews in person because he was already sold on the idea

Looking at what the Maple Leafs have done so far in terms of action, they fired Craig Berube and also parted ways with Brandon Pridham, Derek Clancey and Shane Doan. They aren't messing about in bringing in real change to the organization.

He wanted action and he's getting it. Matthews isn't dumb, he knows the team can't make any serious moves until the playoffs are over and the draft is upon us. But he has seen the team actively trying to improve and make a statement.

They are trying hard to pry David Carle out of Denver, and their coaching search has been noted as 'deep and extensive'. They aren't kidding either, as Toronto is just in their early stages of finding a new bench boss.

It may not be exactly what Matthews has asked for right away, but it does give him a bit of confidence knowing that Chayka and company have little hesitation in pulling the trigger on a move which is a refreshing change from the past two seasons.

Auston Matthews may not have been able to meet up with the Maple Leafs in person, but it didn't matter. He was always dedicated to the team, and just wanted them to make sure they brought success for not only him, but the fans.

Now it's up to Chayka to make sure that he uses every resource he can to get it done.
