The NHL All-Star weekend should be one of the best and most enjoyable events on the sports calendar, but unfortunately, it appears that much like their Maple Leafs, the NHL may have priced many fans in Toronto out of the event.
Ticket Pricing
Toronto is known to be one of Canada and North America's most expensive cities, and while no one expected to get rink-side seats for $100, this is still out of control.
According to a recent anecdotal report from Editor in Leaf, the cheapest tickets are running upwards of $500 in the nosebleeds, with the most expensive tickets running fans upwards of $5,000 per seat, so the NHL has to realize how difficult this will make it for some people.
Here is a sample from the blogger EditorinLeaf explaining when he bought tickets to watch the Maple Leafs:
There were no options for three people to attend the game together and sit together, and that didn't end up mattering, because the cheapest tickets were $900, each.
I bought some behind-the-net tickets for a Leafs and Rangers game last year and spent $500 for the pair. It was expensive, but at least it was doable. The seats were also great.
The cheapest tickets for the allstar game were in the rafters.
I checked back today to see what was available, and there were some cheaper ones after-all just $757 dollars per ticket (again, in the 300 section).
I don't think I'd spend $1500 to go to any game, but I sure as heck am going to be able to see the players up close if I do.
Inaccessible
Currently on TicketMaster, the cheapest seat we can find sits at $586, and for children, families and general fans that want to see the best NHL players in the world converge for a weekend of fun, it's not ideal.
Given the fun of the weekend, it's likely that the seats will sell out by the time the event rolls around, but in the future, the NHL need to take a look at the process and make such events more accessible for all fans.
