Per Elliotte Friedman, although it's unlikely Auston Matthews signs a contract extension within the coming week, the team is confident he will before the season:
Now it won't be cheap....according to a report inThe Athletic, writer Jonas Siegal predicts Matthews could be shopping for a deal around the $14 million mark. Here's a snippet from the article:
"A five-year deal would buy up the entirety of Matthews' prime, his age-27, 28, 29, 30, and 31 seasons.
It could also shatter the previous precedent for these types of contracts. The Leafs could be looking at a number as high as $14.5 million on the cap on a five-year deal."
A $14 million AAV contract would ECLIPSE the current highest salary of $12.6 million, held by Colorado's Nathan MacKinnon.
