It seems Toronto Maple Leafs General Manager Brad Treliving wants Ryan O'Reilly to stick around. However, it also seems he wants the pending unrestricted free agent to take a pretty big discount.

The Deal

Earlier today, the Carolina Hurricanes re-signed 34-year-old Jordan Stall to a four-year deal that has an average annual value of $2.9 million.

The latest rumour has the Leafs offering 32-year-old O'Reilly a similar deal, even though O'Reilly could be looking at up to $6 million on the open market.

The Discount

No question O'Reilly had an off year in 2022-23, putting up just 30 points in 53 games between the St. Louis Blues and Toronto. He is used to putting up 55 to 75 points consistently during an NHL year.

That said, O'Reilly is two years younger than Staal, and other than last season, has had a better offensive career than Staal. Whether he's willing to take this kind of discount to remain a Maple Leaf remains to be seen, but I'm betting the final AAV is north of Staal's.
