Regardless of the explanation, it will be a while before this one is water under the bridge for most Toronto fans. Morgan Rielly appeared to score a game-tying goal in the second period of game 5 against the Florida Panthers Friday night, but the officials said no, reviewed it, and upheld the call on the ice.

As anyone could imagine, there was a massive amount of controversy, with many feeling the puck was across the line and should have counted. There was enough that the NHL released an official ruling on the play explaining why it wasn't allowed.

Explanation

"The referee deemed the play dead prior to the puck crossing the Florida line. The call was made in accordance to Rule 78.5 (xii), which states apparent goals shall be disallowed 'when the referee deems the play has been stopped, even if he had not physically had the opportunity to stop play by blowing his whistle'."

Long story short, the referee can deem the play dead without blowing the whistle. It seems utterly crazy, but it's there in the rule book.
