Throughout the past couple of seasons in the blue and white, Matthews has had health issues surrounding his wrist. In 2021, Matthews had surgery on his left wrist but has been seen on numerous occasions to be favouring yet another injury.
After a lack of production from him in round two, many sought out to believe he was battling an injury throughout the postseason. With this in mind, surgery for Matthews has not been ruled out just yet. In the words of NHL Insider Chris Johnston, the rumours were true, and Matthews was apparently battling an injury that requires future treatment.
As the rumour has quickly spread, Leafs fans have now come to notice that Matthews seemed to have a wrist brace on in the handshake line against the Florida Panthers in round two.
With so much at stake for this generational talent, I'm intrigued to see the course of action Matthews and the organization take, especially with it being his second surgery in his young career. As there is no official decision on next steps, there is no timeline for his return. If one thing is for certain, the Leafs want him to be one-hundred percent before having him suit up and don't want to exercise the idea of any further injury.
