The Toronto Maple Leafs have been in the market for an assistant coach since it lost Spencer Carberry to the Washington Capitals. Today comes word that a former NHL head coach turned down an offer to join the team.

New Jersey Devils

According to Elliotte Friedman, former Vancouver Canucks bench boss Travis Green was extended an offer to become an assistant coach in Toronto under Sheldon Keefe. Green chose to join the New Jersey Devils instead, replacing Andrew Brunette who recently became head coach of the Nashville Predators. Friedman states Green also turned down the Calgary Flames.

"There is word Travis Green will join New Jersey's staff in the position vacated by Andrew Brunette. Green had several options believed to include Calgary and Toronto, and chose the Devils."- Elliotte Friedman

Taking the Next Step

If any team seems poised to take the next step and start seriously competing for a Stanley Cup, it's the Devils. So, there should be little surprise that New Jersey's offer is the one Green accepted. Still, it's a bit of a proverbial smack in the face to a team like the Leafs, which has been hoping to take the next step for a while.
