Brad Treliving is only in his second day as general manager of the Toronto Maple Leafs, and he's already making some massive statements about their future. One question that has loomed large over Toronto is what to do with head coach Sheldon Keefe, who's had a rocky tenure in Toronto so far. Treliving doesn't seem to be too stressed about the decision and even spoke about it during his press conference today.
Treliving to Meet With Keefe
During his press conference today, Treliving was asked about head coach Sheldon Keefe and his future with the Toronto Maple Leafs. Treliving didn't make any absolute statements, but had this to say.
«My outside lens of Sheldon, I think he's a really good coach...We're going to sit down." - Brad Treliving
While that might seem a bit vague, it would be unwise of Treliving to say with 100% certainty that he is or isn't keeping Keefe around. He is going to meet with the coach and get a better feel of the landscape in Toronto before making a final decision.
Treliving Already Has One Coaching Decision to Make
The Leafs already need to replace Spencer Carbery, an assistant coach who recently left Toronto to accept the head coaching position in Washington. Treliving will likely wait to make his decision on Keefe before looking to fill that vacancy.
If Treliving relieves Keefe of his duties this summer, he could let the incoming head coach help make the decision on who his new assistant is. We've seen that strategy employed around the league before, and it would make sense.
