Ennis officially announced his retirement from the National Hockey League via Instagram
Ennis retires after a 13 year playing career that includes the Buffalo Sabres, Minnesota Wild,Toronto Maple Leafs, Ottawa Senators & Edmonton Oilers.
A Western Hockey League champion in 2007 with the Medicine Hat Tigers, Ennis, a prolific junior scorer, would be drafted a year later in the first round of the 2008 NHL Entry Draft by the Buffalo Sabres, 26th overall.
Adter debuting in 2009 with Buffalo, Ennis would go on to play eight seasons with the Sabres, the 5'9 forward being a key weapon on the team's top-six. Ennis would net a team-leading 20 goals and 46 points in 2014-15 in the team's last place season in the race for Connor McDavid, although the lottery placed Buffalo 2nd, a consolation prize in Jack Eichel.
However, while the outlook improved for Buffalo in getting a potential star, luck came down on Ennis, two concussions the next season caused him to miss a majority of 2015-16.
Ennis would be traded to Minnesota in 2017, but struggled to replicate his scoring for the Wild. After being bought-out by Minnesota at the end of the season, Ennis was signed by Toronto, getting 12 goals, but found his offensive footing again next year with rival Ottawa, with 14 goals and 33 points in 61 games for the Senators.
Ottawa traded Ennis in the same season to his hometown Oilers, where he played 9 games. After just 39 games in two seasons, Ennis returned to Ottawa in 2021-22, once again finding more offense with 8 goals and 24 points. Ennis had spent the past two seasons in Europe playing in Switzerland & Germany.
In 700 career NHL games, Ennis had 144 goals, 202 assists & 346 points.
